Chauvet Cave, France.
these are some of the oldest known cave paintings (35,000 b.c.) and, strangely enough, also the most artistically beautiful. most of the animals painted on the walls are now extinct (see: the european cave lions on the left) as i learn more about it it just keeps getting cooler and cooler. these are basically the oldest pieces of art we know of.
go watch Cave of Forgotten Dreams, it’s a awesome documentary about the chauvet cave. and it’s on netflix. and it’s by werner herzog.
anyway, i’m writing a very boring essay about this interesting thing right now.
